泰州周志陶老先生家住扬桥口附近，距离多儿巷不远。他生前有一首《巧对话街坊》词：“吴陵忆，巧对话街坊。湾（万）子街联兔（多）儿巷，打牛汪偶斗鸡场，牛市配渔行。”其在后注里说，湾子街，人谐音万字街；兔儿巷，人谐音呼多儿巷。昔日，新娘轿必须打从此巷经过，取其吉利。周老对兔儿巷被称多儿巷的来由，作了具体解释，是“兔”与“多”谐音，并告诉了我们多儿巷还与旧时泰州的婚俗有关。 根据周先生的说法，新娘轿从多儿巷经过，取其吉利，当是希望婚后多子。旧时无论是城里与乡间，也不论富室和贫民，总希望家庭人丁兴旺，都以儿孙满堂为荣，觉得儿孙越多，福气越大。将花轿从多儿巷经过，寓意就是早生贵子，多儿多福，婚姻圆满。遥想当年，新婚的花轿总要抬到多儿巷，沿着这条小巷，从巷子这一头，抬到那一头。泰州城里，一年有那么多新人结婚，载着新娘的花轿，组成迎亲的队伍，红灯高举，鼓乐齐鸣，欢声笑语，喜气洋洋，这就使得多儿巷长年处于欢乐氛围之中，难怪看上去并不起眼的多儿巷，在泰州是妇孺皆知，声名远扬。 多儿巷地理位置优越，与南侧的稻河为邻。稻河本是一条里下河粮仓与海边盐场长年运粮、运盐所经过的主要河道。从前，来往船只整日塞满河中，明、清以来河南头的泰州西仓地区成了南来北往货物的码头。居住在多儿巷附近的住户，长期以来多是泰州一些较为富有的商贾之家。 生活在多儿巷的街民，习惯从巷子出东，顺着北高南低的西时家巷巷道向南，来到了稻河的西头。如果从河西向南上个小坡，不多远就是西仓大街；要是从河北向东，走过三五十公尺，就到了稻河上最西边的板桥，过板桥向南上个小坡，就与河西向南的路会合，来到西仓大街。沿西仓街向东就是泰州城北最为热闹的新桥口，再向东就是里上河一带远近闻名的坡子街；沿西仓街向西，在街南面就是大浦小学，穿过学校南边围墙外向南的小巷，前面就是泰州宽阔的护城河。 泰州的城河水位较高，俗称上河水。城北稻河等河流的水，水位较低，俗称下河水位，上下河的水位差在一公尺左右。从前淮南盐场出场的盐船，都得从这里，由人工抬（挑）着盐包，从下河的盐船抬上岸，经过板桥抬到城河里外运。清嘉庆、道光时泰州诗人康发祥在一首《海陵竹枝词》里说：“抬盐浦在北门西，丰歉居民命不齐；满地雪花多拥慧，天将余利养穷嫠。”晚清泰州诗人储树人也在一首《海陵竹枝词》里说：“抬盐浦里日喧嚣，大捆分为小捆销；当日三人抬一捆，如今两捆一人挑。”历史上泰州稻河头，成了里下河的门户，前后繁华了五百多年。 新中国成立以后，稻河头附近逐渐发生了变化。1950年，原驻在宝应县柳堡村的华中第一行政区《人民报》印刷厂，迁来泰州，在稻河头安营扎寨，次年改名为国营泰州人民印刷厂，印制中小学课本、日历及天坛牌扑克等。1959年泰州人民印刷厂被国务院授予中央红旗单位锦旗。此后，人民印刷生产规模不断扩大，厂区内盖起了楼房。在稻河头、五巷及多儿巷一带，人印厂成了当地的一处重要地标。 1952年为配合治淮工程，经水利部治淮委员会批准，在稻河西约1公里处兴建了泰州船闸，隔断了近600年的泰州上下河水便得以沟通，南来北往的船只可以经过泰州船闸便捷进出泰州城，稻河头货物转运的历史慢慢画上了句号，风光不再。 稻河头是指稻河最南端的河段，这里的河水从北边里下河流来，在此停住。河里的的水质，主要靠里下河水位的升降流动与河水的自净功能而决定，当停泊在稻河的船只逐渐减少和两边居民人口密度不断增加后，河水水质慢慢渐渐变差，以致一度被称为臭沟头。

1957年3月，为改善稻河两岸城市居民的生活用水，人民政府从城河北岸大浦头向北，铺设了一条直径1米的地下涵管，直通北边的稻河头。大浦头放水处设直升式闸门，配手摇式起闭机械。打开闸门，源源不断的上河城河里水，径直向北边流到了稻河头，由于上下河水有不小的水头差，在涵管接到稻河的管口，水流湍急，哗啦啦的流水，沸沸扬扬。沿河人家，等待了几个世纪，终于用上了清澈甘甜的城河水。稻河头西、南两面石砌驳岸的河边，从早到晚都围满了洗菜、淘米，汰衣，挑水的市民。妇女们会聚到河边，互致问候，家长里短，小道消息，天南海北，欢声笑语，谈笑风生，无休无止，一派祥和安乐的气象。到了夏天，周围地区人家的小孩，经常是结伴来到这里游泳、潜水，打水仗、摸鱼虾，久久不肯离去，更成了城市一道亮丽的风景线。那些曾经生活在这里，现在年龄四五十岁以上的人们，对于那情那景，至今历历在目，记忆犹新；而曾经生于斯长于斯，后来远在他乡的游子，对这里的从前，则更是魂牵梦萦，难以忘怀。 随着泰州城市建设的不断推进，上世纪末的1995年，县级泰州市政府确定对包括稻河头与多儿巷在内的西仓路北和青年北路东侧的地段实施旧城改造，原属泰州工商银行的金冠开发公司，承担此项改造任务。当了解到多儿巷1号是一处重要古建筑时，根据群众的呼声和意见，该建筑保留并整体保护。2001年8月，金冠公司对多儿巷1号进行了维修。同年10月金冠公司结合工行大楼改造，对多儿巷1号周边进行了美化与绿化。

2010年3月，在文化泰州建设的浪潮中，稻河古街区改造复兴项目一朝工程，在鞭炮与烟花的轰鸣声中破土动工。其中，何镜堂院士担纲设计泰州科学发展观展示馆。经过仅1年多的日夜奋战，2011年8月12日，泰州科学发展观展示馆建成并对社会开放。 （未完待续）
